Resurgent Filipino featherweight Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista will go head-to-head against the cousin of Mexican boxing legend Marco Antonio Barrera when he returns to ring action in “Philippines vs. The World” on August 28.

Fighting opposite Bautista at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu City is Alejandro Barrera, the former World Boxing Council (WBC) Continental Americas featherweight champion and cousin of Marco.

Barrera told ALA Promotions public relations man Chad Cañares that he is prepared to go the distance against the hard-hitting boxer from Bohol.

We will win for sure. If I can knock him out – I will – but I am prepared to fight him to the limit even if the fight will go the distance,” said Barrera.

For Bautista, fighting Barrera is a stepping stone to get him fights against big-named boxers in the featherweight divisions like Juan Manuel Lopez, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Rafael Marquez and Chris John.

“It would be an honor for me to fight any one of them, even if I lose,” Bautista said. “But I would like to fight Juanma Lopez.”

This will be Bautista’s third fight since undergoing surgery for an injury in his left wrist.

Also fighting under the “Philippines vs. The World” card are Milan “Milenyo” Melindo and Jimrex “The Executioner” Jaca.

The undefeated Melindo will face South Korean flyweight champ Jin-Man Jeon while Jaca will fight Mexican Pipino Cuevas, Jr., the son of the legendary World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion Pipino Cuevas. – With reports from PhilBoxing.com
