Gilas too strong for Taipei Stars

HSINCHUANG. — Ranged against a collegiate team, Smart Gilas Pilipinas stormed to an 83-52 victory over the Taipei All-Stars 83-52 Wednesday as the 32nd Jones Cup International basketball tournament got going at the Hsinchuang Gymnasium here.






American Marcus Douthit banged in 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds while Marcio Lassiter and Japeth Aguilar added 11 and 10 markers each as the RP men’s squad controlled the game from start to finish.
Chris Lutz drilled two consecutive three-pointers, helping Smart Gilas take a 17-4 spread in the first period that set the mood for a rout.
Greg Slaughter’s three-point play and a putback gave the Filipinos an 18-point lead before halftime and they never looked back from thereon.
The massacre continued in the next two quarters with Dylan Ababou, Mark Barroca, RJ Jazul and Mac Baracael combining with Douthit and Lassiter for an unreachable 78-44 advantage with four minutes left.
"We played against a young team. We’re bigger and we dominated the rebounding,’’ said Smart Gilas coach  
Rajko Toroman.
"It’s a nice win especially at the beginning of the tournament,’’ he added.
The victory boosted the confidence of Smart Gilas going into its match with defending champion Iran at 3 p.m. Thursday in the seven-team tournament.
