Omar Chavez, son of boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez, is set to take on unbeaten Olympian Misael Rodriguez in a 10-round super middleweight main event this Saturday, January 25, at Arena Potosi in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. This highly anticipated all-Mexican clash was initially scheduled for October 2024 but was canceled on fight night due to weight issues. Now, Chavez is ready to settle unfinished business and prove himself against Rodriguez, who captured a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics.
Chavez (41-8-1, 28 KOs) has been on a roll since his loss to Rafael Amarillas Ortiz in June 2022. He has earned three stoppages, including a second-round knockout of Michi Muñoz last May. This Saturday, Chavez is looking to continue his momentum and showcase his skills in front of his Mexican fans.
On the other side of the ring, Rodriguez (14-0, 7 KOs) enters this fight unbeaten but hasn't fought in the U.S. since September 2019, when he secured a third-round stoppage over Brandon Maddox. Since then, he’s gone on a solid run in Mexico, securing four victories, including his most recent win against Ricardo Bañuelos Cernas in Chihuahua via an eight-round unanimous decision. After a 19-month layoff, Rodriguez will be looking to make a statement against Chavez.
This epic battle, along with the exciting undercard, will be streamed live exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+ starting at 8:30 p.m. ET / 5:30 p.m. PT.
In other action from Mexico, several compelling matchups are set to unfold. Junior featherweights Luis Fernando Rodriguez (15-1, 14 KOs) and Jose Angel Amaro (11-0-1, 3 KOs) will square off in a 10-round battle. Bantamweights Juan Carlos Barrientos (6-4, 3 KOs) and Jorge Ascanio Martinez (10-1-1, 7 KOs) will clash in an 8-round fight. Featherweights Axel Delgado Sanchez (2-1) and Tibet Carlos Ruiz (4-0-1, 4 KOs) will compete in a 4-round contest. Light flyweights Camila Zamorano (10-0, 1 KO) and Yoselyn Perez Lopez (5-0-1) are set for an 8-round bout, while junior bantamweights Fernando Quiroz (8-0-1, 5 KOs) and Diego Briseño Portilla (8-0-1) will face off in another 8-round showdown.
With so much action lined up, this event promises to deliver an exciting night of boxing. Fans won't want to miss the intense rivalry between Chavez and Rodriguez, as well as the thrilling undercard action.
