The Boston Celtics have officially rewritten the NBA record books.
On Friday night, during their game against the Sacramento Kings, Payton Pritchard knocked down a three-pointer in the second quarter — and with that shot, Boston set a new NBA record for most three-pointers made in a single season.
The Celtics have now made 1,370 three-pointers this season — with five games still remaining — breaking the previous record of 1,363 threes, set by Stephen Curry’s 2022-23 Golden State Warriors.
It’s a moment that feels like it was building all year. On opening night alone, Boston launched 61 three-pointers and buried 29 of them against the Knicks, setting the tone for what would be a historic campaign from beyond the arc.
And it’s not just about volume. Boston is also on pace to break the Utah Jazz's record for the most threes made per game in a season. Utah set the previous mark at 16.7 threes per game during the 2020-21 season — but the Celtics are now averaging a staggering 17.9 made threes per game.
Record Progression Snapshot:
-
Previous record for total threes: 1,363 (2022-23 Golden State Warriors)
-
Previous record for threes per game: 16.7 (2020-21 Utah Jazz)
-
Current Celtics numbers: 1,370 total threes and 17.9 threes per game (with 5 games left)
Why It Matters:
This record highlights Boston’s shift to a high-powered, perimeter-focused offense. Behind stars like Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, Jrue Holiday, and Kristaps Porziņģis, plus deadly sharpshooters like Sam Hauser and Payton Pritchard, the Celtics have built one of the most dangerous three-point attacks in NBA history.
With the playoffs just around the corner, Boston’s ability to stretch the floor and punish defenses from deep could be the X-factor in their championship chase.
