The NBA has handed out suspensions following a heated altercation that took place during Sunday’s game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Detroit Pistons.
The scuffle started in the second quarter of the Wolves' 123-104 win at Target Center on March 30. With 8:36 left in the second period, Timberwolves forward Naz Reid was fouled by Pistons rookie Ron Holland II. Reid took exception, pointed at Holland, and approached him aggressively. Things quickly escalated.
Holland pushed Donte DiVincenzo, who then retaliated by shoving Holland in the chest. The two, along with Reid, got tangled and ended up crashing into the stands.
Just when it seemed the refs would step in, Pistons players Isaiah Stewart and Marcus Sasser joined the chaos near the spectator area and shoved both DiVincenzo and Reid, adding fuel to the fire. All five players were hit with technical fouls and were ejected from the game.
On Monday, the NBA officially announced the following suspensions:
-
Isaiah Stewart – 2-game suspension (due to prior unsportsmanlike conduct history)
-
Donte DiVincenzo – 1-game suspension
-
Ron Holland II – 1-game suspension
-
Naz Reid – 1-game suspension
-
Marcus Sasser – 1-game suspension
This isn’t the first time Stewart has found himself in hot water with the league, and the NBA made it clear that his suspension was longer because of a pattern of behavior.
As the regular season heads into its final stretch, this isn’t the kind of momentum either team was hoping for—especially the Pistons, who continue to struggle with discipline and chemistry issues.
